Impact on Libraries
Hopefully, not a lot! The bill ensures that employers are not permitted to pay lessor wages on the basis of sex, race, or ethnicity. Changes from the federal law include provisions taht include fringe benefits as well as straight wages, making it illegal to reduce seniority due to pregnancy, parental, or family or medical leave, and requiring that merit-based pay systems be communicated in writing to all employees. The bill also forbids employers from using a wage history of a prospective employee in determining employement offers or wage offers; unless the candidate voluntarily provides a number without prompting that would increase the wage originally offered by the employer – in other words, it would be illegal for an employer to ask a job candidate this question.
The biggest changes that libraries may have to make would be to improve documentation and to implement regular wage reviews to ensure this type of wage violation does not inadvertently occur.
